Iron Man enters the foray with his usual swagger and with Robert Downey Jr’s delightful dry wit

Avengers Assemble Review

It’s a cinema fan’s dream; a cast of some of the greatest heroes ever thrown into a big melting pot of a movie, their disparate characters being forced together like an excited kid might assemble Lego blocks. It’s a dream job, too, for director Joss Whedon, but it’s also a very real challenge for Whedon, charged with bringing the colossal universes of each character into one cohesive whole.
Whedon does a terrific job of moulding the Avengers into a well balanced cast of characters. Chris Evans’ Captain America is conflicted, lost in a world he doesn’t understand. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor manages to swagger his way through whilst handling his sibling rivalry with Loki. Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner find a brilliant contrast between sweetness and good old fashioned Hulk-Smash rage. Robert Downey Jr.’s dry wit is perfect for shiny old Iron man. Jackson delivers the badass-attitude and charisma. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is smart and tough, the best take on the character I’ve seen (particularly in her conflicted relationship with Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye). Every part in Avengers Assemble is played excellently, and bringing it all together is a great contrast of the drama and comedy that marks all of Whedon’s best work. Sadly, all this fantastic work is brought down by one crucial flaw.

Why does Avengers Assemble Exist?

Avengers Assemble has only one reason for existing: because having so many great characters in a movie feels like a delightful treat, like a great big candy store of comic delights. And it is. But in many ways that’s all it is. Yes, there’s a great sense of humour to it, some great new takes on favourite old characters and some amazing action, and if what you want from a movie is just plain and simple fun, then for all intents and purposes, Avengers Assemble is a fantastic movie. You will love it, if you just want a rollercoaster ride.

If you want anything more than that, say a genuine meaning to a film, a purpose, some inspiration that is going to last with you after the movie’s finished, then you’re likely to leave feeling empty.   Avengers Asssemble is devoid of soul. It’s the sort of film that, based on the great performances put in by the cast and the undeniable treat that is the assortment of superhero characters, will be loved whilst it’s hot, but it’s a superficial kind of heat. When all the hype dies down, after the DVD is released and starts to gather dust, this won’t be a movie you’ll want to pick back up and watch again. Take that as you will. Perhaps it means you should leap up and run to the cinema to enjoy Avengers Assemble whilst it’s hot (and you most likely will enjoy it) or perhaps it means you should just put your feet up, stay at home and watch something that will strike a deeper chord.

For what it is, Avengers Assemble is amazing. Just don’t overestimate what it is: candy.

Avengers Assemble Review Score: 3.5 / 5
