Body Language Examples: Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is the ultimate icon for a body language example of the little-girl come-on pose, which she helped make famous.

Marilyn Monroe uses fairly standard, but very effective, body language of attraction gestures in this poster. The keys to this pose are:

The hand resting on her face is a sign that she is thinking (which combined with her other gestures create the impression that she is more specifically thinking about sex)

She has her shoulder raised and rounded. This is a double-gesture. First of all, she is showing the curve of her shoulder to gain sexual attention, and she is also slightly ducking her head into her shoulders, giving the impression of insecurity and helping to achieve the little-girl image. Together, these give the impression, “I’m above you, but I’m also fun and sexy so it’s okay.”

She’s showing her throat and neck which suggests submissiveness.

Her chin is raised with her eyes looking down, giving the impression that she is above the world and looking down on everyone else. In many cases, this body language gesture would look arrogant and be ill received, but it is balanced with Marilyn’s submissive little-girl gestures.

She’s wearing a lot of lipstick to accentuate her lips and make them look more sexual

She’s making the same face a woman would make when having an orgasm (which is her trademark pose and, obviously, a very powerful image to present to men)
