It doesn’t matter where or what you’re interviewing for–residential mortgage broker, life insurance salesman or junior stockbroker–your interview body language could make or break your interview. Perhaps that seems harsh, but take into account that 55% of all communication is nonverbal, as well as the simple fact that your interviewer doesn’t have a great deal of time to form an impression, and it’s easy to see why even the smallest body language details can make a big difference. Yes, interview body language really is of the utmost importance, but don’t worry, this check list of good interview body language will give you the advantage you need.

Good Interview body Language Checklist

Many hiring managers claim to be able to spot a potential candidate in under thirty seconds, so make absolutely certain that their very first impression of you is a good one. Give yourself a once over long before the interview so you’re not worried about your clothing or hair once the interview begins.

Practice your handshake. Click here for Full Guide to Handshakes, or just be aware that the best handshake is dry and firm but not painful. And be sure to look them in the eye when you say “Hello.”

Fidgeting is a big no-no. leave your hair and face alone, don’t rock in your seat, don’t tap your feet, don’t drum your fingers.. These are signs of insecurity and impatience, so avoid them at all costs.

Good Interview Body Language: The Do NOTS

Make sure to avoid these mistakes of body language during the interview, right until you are out of the building

  • Do not touch your neck or your nose, mouth or eyes. The first suggests insecurity, the latter three are signs that you are hiding something.
  • Do not fold your arms over your chest or you will look protective
  • Do not cross your legs.
  • Do not lean towards the door or point your feet or belly button towards it. This indicates that you would like to leave.
  • Do not slouch.
  • Do not stare blankly into space.

Good interview Body Language DOs
  • Do use relaxed and deep breathing. We are subconsciously very aware of other people’s breathing. By breathing in a relaxed way you will show confidence and composure.
  • Do sit straight, slightly leaning forward, with your chin in a neutral position (not pointing up or down) and with both feet level in front of you. This will make you appear a) engaged b) interested and c) confident.
  • Do nod occasionally to show that you are listening and understanding.
  • Do leave a comfortable amount of personal space between yourself and your interviewer.
  • Do show interest and acknowledgement of both your interviewers (if you have more than one)
  • Do be aware that you may be interrupted as business is operating as usual for the company. Remain neutral if interrupted, unless the interviewer motions to you, in which case give a polite nod.

Be certain to leave as good a last impression as you did a first impression. Look pleased to have met your interviewer (they are people after all and appreciate signs of being liked) and give another good handshake. Do not relax completely until you are out of the building and in the car / cab.

More Good Interview body language Tips

Memorise the list above so you know it off by heart and can catch any mistake you make before they become an issue.

Get a friend or family member to give you a rehearsal. Give them the list above so they can see what you’re doing right and wrong.

Have all your answers planned in your head before hand.

Big Tip: Have in your mind some memory or mental picture that relaxes you. Think about this a few minutes before the scheduled interview time, it will put you in the right frame of mind for success.

Enjoy your new job!

The Art of Body Language, Explained

1x1.trans The Art of Body Language, Explainedbody language 3                                                      1x1.trans The Art of Body Language, Explainedbody language 3

1x1.trans The Art of Body Language, Explainedbody language 3 Learning the secrets of the art of body language will make you a master communicator and negotiator. Get started right here with Body Language Explained.

According to body language researcher Albert Mehrabian (professor of psychology at the University of California), 55% of all communication is non-verbal. That’s one giant slice of communication pie. And let’s face it; if you want to get the most out of your communication—be it business communication, social communication, with friends, romantic interests or anyone else— it’s a slice of pie that you can’t afford to turn your nose up at. Thankfully, you’re about to have everything you could ever need to know about body language explained.
Before we get to truly looking at the science of body language, let me talk about one of the best examples of body language the world has ever seen: James Bond. Skyfall is going to be released in a few weeks, and millions of people will be rooting for Bond as he takes on Javier Bardem’s bad guy. But what makes James Bond so popular? A huge part of it is his body language. He stands tall, speaks slowly and clearly, has an extremely powerful fixed gaze. .. everything about James Bond’s body language screams style. Bond is a great example of what can be achieved through body language.

The Importance of Body Language Explained

We stated on the previous page that body language is the way our physical expressions reveal our feelings, emotions, meanings or intentions and is often unconscious. Both the reading and the presenting of body language is usually unconscious. We both interpret other people’s body language and use body language ourselves without thinking about it. A body language expert, however, uses body language intentionally to gain deep insight into what an individual is thinking and feeling as well as to present themselves in the best possible light, using strong body language to create an image of confidence and many other characteristics of personality. In this way, it’s perhaps best understood that the body language expert makes use of the reams of personal information that is presented under the seams, reams of information that is incredibly valuable.

The Fundamentals of Body Language Explained

In a moment we’ll take the deep plunge into the vast resource of information offered through body language, looking at what different body language gestures mean, but first there are a few rules you must understand.

Gestures and Clusters of Body Language Explained

Think of body language as being similar to words and sentences. Like words, a gesture can have several meanings (a person folding their arms over their chest might be defensive, but they also might just be cold). It’s only by combining gestures into gesture clusters (sentences) that the true meaning is revealed.

Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Body Language Explained

One of the keys to being good at both reading body language and using it is to be aware of when body language and spoken words do and do not match.  When people lie, their words do not match their boy language. When they are being honest, there is a natural congruence between body language and spoken words. It is only by paying attention to both verbal and nonverbal information that we can truly gain insight into a person.

Logic and Context of Body Language Explained

It can be tempting and exciting to start analysing everyone’s body language, but sadly this over-enthusiasm often leads us to make a big mistake. That mistake is forgetting to think logically and forgetting to consider context. Is that person really being defensive with their arms over their chest or are they just cold? Is your friend covering their mouth with a hand because they just lied, or maybe they’ve just got a pimple they’re trying to hide. Always take context into account.

With these three rules, you can begin to learn to read and use body language. But before we get to that, here are a few important pointers.

Practising Body Language: Pointers

  • You can’t fake body language to a good body language reader for a long time. Little clues will begin to give you away after a few minutes and the other person will start to lose view you as untrustworthy.
  • Never make apparent the fact that you’re either reading or using body language.
  • The best way to learn about body language is to just be very watchful. Spend ten to fifteen minutes a day closely watching the body language of both yourself and others.

So, body language explained, let’s continue on now to look at how popular myths and misconceptions sabotage people’s body language skills. These will likely include a few mistakes you make at the moment and need to be aware of . . .

Five New Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction for Singles Dating

1x1.trans Five New Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction for Singles Datingbody language 3 Relationships and interpersonal Communication relationships Articles on Dating Advice

Knowing the secret body language signs of attraction allows you to know, without mistake, precisely who is and who is not attracted to you. Understanding these body language gestures is essentially for singles dating. . .

Five New Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction for Singles Dating

Though we may have all the technology and gadgets in the world, as people, when it comes down to it, we’re still just wild animals. Through evolution we have learnt to read people body monitoring their body language.

Just as animals have specific ways of showing attraction to one another, so do humans. By understanding this hidden language of the body you empower yourself to recognise a person’s feelings. Stop feeling uncertain and be confidence about sexual interest by learning to read these five secret body language signs of attraction.

Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction #1: Forehead Bow

When you see your date doing a forehead bow you can be certain that they’re after more than friendship. In this body language gesture the head tips forward and your date looks up at you. This simple head movement shows certain interest and strong attraction. An opposite of this gesture is tilting the head backwards and looking downwards, which shows dominance. Be careful if you see this backwards-tilt! It means your date is looking down on you (literally and figuratively).

Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction #2: Mirroring

Many animals use “isopraxism” to help establish a positive relationship and to show interest. Isopraxism essentially means mirroring. Both animals and humans mirror one another’s movements as a sign of interest and to show agreeability. You may notice your date copying some of your movements. For instance, you lean forwards and your date does the same. This is a strong sign of interest and when shown in dating is a very encouraging body language sign of attraction.

Read the complete guide to mirroring body language HERE.

Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction #3: Shoulder Raise

This is one of the easiest signs of attraction in body language to recognise. It’s a simple movement in which the shoulders are raised. This natural muscular response looks cute, almost childlike. It is an emotional response we show when we like someone. If you see your date using this body language gesture, you can be confident they truly admire you.

Read the complete guide to arm body language HERE.

Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction #4: Toes turning in

The feet, you may be surprised to hear, give off some of the most telling body language gestures. One of the most important gestures a person can show with their feet, at least when dating, is called “tribial torsion.” In this gesture the toes turn inwards. This is a “shrinking” kind of body language that reveals two things. Firstly, it shows attraction, but it also shows that your date is feeling a little intimidated by you.

Read the complete guide to legs body language HERE.

Secret Body Language Signs of Attraction #5: Showing the palms

Showing the palms is an important body language gesture that is seen in many different areas. It always has a similar message: friendliness and possible submissiveness. If you think about a beggar asking for money, their hands will be facing palm-up. Contrastingly, in business, a boss will likely use the palm-down position to show authority. Be careful of a date who gives the palms-down gesture; they’re likely to try and control you. Showing palms up is a more positive gesture and shows openness and friendliness, though if it is used often it is also a sign of submissiveness.

Five Body Language Secrets for Self Defence

1x1.trans Five Body Language Secrets for Self Defencebody language 3 Discover the body language secrets that can turn your image into a powerful form of self defence

Years ago, before I studied body language, I was often physically and verbally attacked by people. In school I was bullied repeatedly, after finishing school I was seen as an easy target, but once I learned the secrets of body language, my whole life changed.

To understand how body language secrets can work as a powerful form of self defence, you have to understand the mind of bullies and of other trouble makers.

Bullies are essentially cowards. They’ll pick on anyone they believe to be an easy target. The way in which they determine who is and who is not an easy target is by looking at a person’s body language.

You can learn how to tell who is a bully before they even get near you with THIS GUIDE.

Weak body language will make you look like you can’t stand up for yourself. Holding your head low, fidgeting nervously, protectively lowering your chin to protect your throat area. . . these are all nervous body language gestures that will make you look like an easy target. Weak body language to a bully or other aggressive type of person is like a red flag before a bull. They’ll see your nervousness, recognise your lack of confidence and take advantage of it.

The only way to counter this is to use positive body language secrets. The following ten secrets of body language will make you look strong and confident even when you don’t feel it, and by doing so, they’ll keep trouble away.

Five Body Language Secrets for Self Defence

For a complete guide to body language (which is 100% free) read THIS

1: Don’t cover your throat or chest: Covering the throat and chest area is a body language gesture we have learnt to use through evolution in order to protect ourselves. We cover these areas in order to prevent them from being attacked. Unfortunately, these gestures also make us look weak. It’s better to stand confidently with your arms at your side and your chin neutral. This will create a strong impression and will stop others from thinking you’re an easy target.

2: Stand with your feet at shoulder width apart: Nervous people often clench their legs or stand with their feet right next to each other. This looks polite and formal but also weak. By standing with your feet shoulder width apart you show confidence and strength.

3: Don’t clench your fists: The to body language secrets above are about not looking weak. If you want to protect yourself, however, you also need to stop showing any signs of aggression, which can be misread by others, making them think you’re going to cause trouble, resulting in an unnecessary confrontation. To avoid this, hold your hands relaxed and never clench your fists.

4: Move slowly and calmly: Any kind of fidgeting or awkward movements give off the wrong impression. Most of the time they make us look nervous, which is a sign of weakness that makes us look like an easy target. Aim to move slowly, smoothly and calmly and you  will look relaxed, in control and, again, strong.

5: Stand tall but relaxed: Standing tall makes us naturally look bigger, which of course is a good thing for self defence. Standing rigidly tall makes us tense and actually looks protective. To stand tall but relaxed, think of your body extending from your head downwards rather than from your feet upwards. This makes you taller but also make you more relaxed.

There are many more body language secrets for strength HERE.

By using these body language secrets for self defence you will show inner strength that people will respect. You’ll also keep yourself from attracting the wrong sort of attention.

The Vital Warning Body Language Signs in Job Interviews: body language 3 Business Articles: Motivation & Productivity / Body Language & Communication

What’s the best strategy for a job interview? How do you go into a job interview knowing you will be successful? Your best chance lies not in your CV or your predetermined answers, but rather in your ability to communicate with your interviewer and to get along on a one to one basis.

If you truly want to be successful in your next job interview, you need to be able to quickly assess the mood and feelings of your interviewer in order to guide them to a more positive view of you.

Thankfully, body language can help you here. By learning to decode the nonverbal signals your interviewer is sending, you’ll learn to interpret what the interviewer is thinking and feeling, hence affording you valuable information that will make all the different when it comes to getting a job.

Looking for the following body language signs in interviews to know your interviewers thoughts and feelings.

Body Language Signs to Look for in Interviews

Interest or Lack of: Let’s start with the easy body language signs. If your interviewer is yawning of fidgeting, they’re bored. They may also be disinterested if they are continually looking away from you and even more so if they are leaning backwards.  If your interviewer shows these body language signs of boredom, immediately say something of high interest to regain their attention.

Disbelief: It’s important to know when your interviewer thinks you’re talking BS. Interviewers expect you to stretch the truth in your favour from time to time, but you need to make sure they are believing the vast majority of what you are saying.

If your interviewer frowns, looks disgusted (which is shown by curling the upper lip and nose) or if they cross their arms, they probably don’t believe you. On seeing these signs, immediately say something to re-establish their trust in you.

Hurry Up: Interviewers have to sit through a lot of interviews. After a while, they get boring. It’s at times like this that your interviewer will show impatience, perhaps by tapping a finger or pen on a table or by sighing. At these times, either say something highly interesting or get to the point quicker. The last thing you want is to have the interviewer wishing your interview were over.

By looking for body language signs like these, you can gain insight into the thoughts and feelings of your interviewer and use that information to your advantage, thus greatly increasing your chances of getting a job.

How To Feel Confident By Using Positive Body Language

I’ve stated a great many times over the years that body language isn’t just about reading other people or about shaping the way in which other people see you. The true power of body language lies in the fact that your body language changes the way you feel.

If you stand in a depressed way you will feel depressed. Go ahead and stand with your head faced downward, your arms folded across your chest and slouching over yourself. You will feel weak and depressed.

Now try standing with your feet about a foot apart, your head held high (ish), your arms relaxed at your side and your posture good, standing tall. You will feel confident and self assured.

Positive Body Language is Essential To Feeling Confident

For me, I learned this fact in acting school training in Chekhov’s movement dynamics. Actors knew about the power of body language years ago, and now it seems that body language specialists are cottoning on too.

One body language special who is using this power of body language is social psychologist Amy Cuddy. Cuddy holds a PhD in Psychology from PrincetonUniversity and BA in Social Psychology from the University of Colorado. In the video below she discusses the transformative power of body language. Though, honestly, the best way to learn how to use movement to create positive psychological traits is still through Chekhov’s work.

Note: you may have noticed I’m a little bitter about the fact that this TED presentation is supposedly GROUND BREAKING even though Chekhov wrote about this power of body language over a hundred years ago, but heck, whatever. . .

How To Get what You Want By Reading Body Language

1x1.trans How To Get what You Want By Reading Body Languageuncategorized body language 3 Body Language Course Online Want to know how to get your way when talking to people? As any good business negotiator will attest, getting your way more about being able to read the body language of the other person than it is about what you say. What you need to do to get your way is to learn to read body language.

Good body language skills are a huge advantage in all forms of negotiation, whether you be negotiating a million dollar trade or trying to get someone to make you a cup of tea. Body language is a powerful thing, which is why the past few years have seen a steady increase in the number of degrees and masters degrees in interpersonal communication which strongly focus on body language. It’s also why I wrote the online body language course on this very site.

Yes, when you need to know how to get your way when talking to someone, you need to be able to read their body language. And in particular, you need to be aware of any signs of happiness that the other person shows.

How To Get What You Want By Reading Body Language

People will continually leak information via their body language. These “leaks of information” are subconscious but they reveal valuable information.

Let’s say, for instance, that you are talking to someone who has been sitting with their legs crossed for many minutes, then suddenly they uncross their legs. This unconscious move is a clear sign that somebody is feeling agreeable with you. Uncrossing their legs shows that they are entering a more “open” or agreeable state of mind. So when you see someone do this, you know it’s a good time to ask for what you want.

There are many different clues that a person is becoming more agreeable, all of which are covered in our body language course. Be sure to look out for a sign that a person is in an agreeable mood. Don’t ask for what you want until you see them become agreeable. That’s when you say “So, are you ready to sign the contract” and get a “Yes” in response.

So, the key to getting what you want when talking to someone is to chat casually about subjects they enjoy, then, when you see that their body language has changed to show more agreeability, ask for what you want from then.

Be sure to read our complete body language guide for more information.

Positive Body Language — Because You’re Worth It!

Spend five minutes learning the keys to positive body language and you will empower your life and leave yourself feeling beautiful and successful.

1x1.trans Positive Body Language Because Youre Worth It!body language 3 communication skills Body Language Course Online

How to look good and empower your life with positive body language

Have you ever wondered why some people seem successful to you even before you’ve begun to talk to them? There are people who, the moment you see them, regardless of what they are wearing or what they are doing, simply look successful.

The reason why some people are able to look successful without even doing anything is thanks to positive body language.

Every time we see someone, we subconsciously analyse their body language, reading all sorts of traits in a person. Most of the time, this scanning process occurs beneath the surface. We aren’t consciously aware of our body language most of the time, nor are we aware the everyone else is scanning our body language, nor, indeed, are those people even aware themselves that they’re doing it.

Body language happens beneath the scenes. Because of this, most people don’t make a conscious effort to use positive body language, because they’re unaware of the impact their body language as on their lives.

I could talk for hours about how much of an impact body language has on your life. But it’s easier to see it for yourself.

The next time you go out, adopt the following positive body language gestures. I guarantee you people will respond to you in a more positive way with these keys to positive body language.

The Keys to Positive Body Language — Because You’re Worth It

1)      Learn to have good posture.  Learn to stand straight and hold your body in a relaxed but correct way. This will make you appear elegant, beautiful and in control. Good posture is the single most important part of positive body language. Learn to use it today.

2)      Defy Gravity: People appear happy and positive anytime some part of their body movies upwards. Raise your eyebrows and you’ll look happier and more awake. Lift the corners of your mouth and you smile. Lift you chin and you look confident. Lift your feet higher when you walk and you will appear healthier. Try this for yourself. When you’re out, lift your eyebrow, chin, corner of your mouth, chest and feet and you will look healthy, energised, healthy and more attractive.

3)      Think positive happy thoughts: While this might not be directly about body language (as you’re not really moving your body differently) thinking happy thoughts changes a million different elements of your body language. Grab yourself a camera, think a negative though then take a shot. Repeat with happy thoughts. Notice the difference? Thought so.

4)      Move slowly and smoothly: People who move slowly and smoothly appear more in control, more graceful and more relaxed. Slow down just a little bit and you will feel more relaxed and will also elicit a more positive response from all you meet.

Use these keys to positive by body language and your new nonverbal communication will empower your life. Try it, trust me, it’s worth it.

The Top Ten Nervous Body Language signs

10 : Feet withdrawn : People who are nervous are unmwilling to get involved in activities and will show this by withdrawing their feet, perhaps tucking them under a chair.

9 : Unwillingness to maintain eye contact : It takes confidence to maintain eye contact. If you are deliberately  trying to look someone in the eye and they keep looking away, they are likely nervous.

8 : Nibbling or chewing : These are two very famous examples of nervous body language. For an example, look at Alex Ferguson (Manchester United manager – he always chews gum when watching UTD play)

7 : Fidgeting: Very much akin to nibbling and chewing, nervous energy leads us to fidget and makes it hard to be still.

6 : Mumbling : Many people mumble all the time, but if someone who usually speaks clearly suddenly stars mumbling it’s a dead cert’ they’re nervous.

5 : Body turned aside: Like the feet sign (#10); because we are unwilling to be involved in activities when nervous we will turn our body away.

4 : Head held low: A classic sign of insecurity, holding the head low shows insecurity, nervousness and sometimes even depression.

3 : Biting Finger Nails: The most famous nervous body language sign. We just can’t help but nibble our nails when nervous.

2 : Eyebrows high and held together: Holding the eyebrows high and together is the expression we make when we are afraid but it is also closely related to nervousness.

1 : Shallow breathing: the tension in our body when we are nervous leads us to breath shallowly from the upper chest rather than from the diaphragm.

As always, it’s only when you see several of these gestures together that you can make a successful read. For more on this see our Body Language Course.

Positive Body Language Tip 4: Hold your head in neutral position: There are three main ways of holding the head. One is with the head down. The other with the head up. Finally, with the head neutral so that the chin in level with the floor. When we hold our head high we both look and feel arrogant, an attitude not conducive to positive workplace relationships. When we hold our head low we feel and look depressed, which again will damage workplace relationships. Only by holding the head neutral can we produce the right positive, healthy attitude and look that is vital both to workplace relationships and workplace productivity.

Positive Body Language Tip 5: Sit or stand with your feet flat, side by side: There are many different ways in which the feet can be held (all of which are covered in the free Body language guide here on ARoleModel.com). For workplace productivity, the best way to sit or stand is with the feet flat on the floor and side by side, hip-width apart. Holding the feet in this position will make you feel relaxed but also ready (as in, ready to work). Other feet positions can create feelings of laziness of withdrawal. Holding your feet in this manner, side by side and hip width apart is the best bet when at work (in fact it is the best bet in the vast majority of situation).

Make use of these positive body language tips and you will notice a significant increase in both your workplace productivity and motivation, as well as in relationships with fellow workers.

In ARoleModel.com’s complete body language guide, we comprehensively covered all aspects of body language. In this article, I’ll be taking a brief look at five all-important positive body language tips which are musts for workplace productivity.

The Top Five Positive body Language Tips

Positive Body Language Tip 1: Work on your posture.  Good posture is absolutely essential in the workplace for a number of reasons. Firstly, having good and relaxed posture limits the amount of energy used while simply standing / sitting. The last thing you want at work is to waste your energy unnecessarily by having bad posture. So, what can you do about it?

Take ten minutes out of your day to practice the Alexander Technique (the Alexander Technique is a simple but highly effective floor-based exercise for achieving good posture). If you’d like to learn more about the Alexander Technique consider picking up a copy of The Alexander Technique Manual1x1.trans The Top Five Positive Body Language Tips for Workplace Productivitybody language 3 .

By having good posture, you allow yourself to be 100% comfortable and relaxed, meaning you’re not wasting energy shuffling about and you’re not distracted by any kind of physical discomfort.

Positive Body Language Tip 2: Look people in the eyes: If you’re in sales then you will already know how important it is to look people in the eye simply to build rapport. Looking people in the eye is important in all kinds of business and work. When we look in each other’s eyes we greatly increase the effectiveness of communication. We are more likely to understand one another quickly. This not only saves time when communicating but also helps to build positive relationships, which are essential for achieving and maintaining health levels of workplace productivity.

Positive Body Language Tip 3: Use Space: It can be hard for many people to be productive at work when they’re crammed into a tight space (either by other people or by objects about the room). You need to have space to let your body relax properly and to prevent any physical tension (which would waste energy and inhibit your thinking)l. Make sure you have enough space so that your entire body can be relaxed.
