Top 20 Best True Story Films EVER — And 3 Amazingly Inaccurate Ones

Let’s face it, we all love movies based on true stories. Sure, the word “based” and “true” are more often than not used with a lot of artistic licence. While some movies stick absolutely to the true story, some “base” them so loosely on the truth that the only thing they get right about William Wallace is the fact that he was Scottish.

Speaking of far-stretched true story films, here’s a look at three of the most ridiculous “true story” films of all time. OR you can check out the list of the best true story films right here.

Three of the most ridiculous “True Story” films ever

1x1.trans Top 20 Best True Story Films EVER And 3 Amazingly Inaccurate Ones movie features

3. Gladiator: All right, fine, so Gladiator’s an awesome film and gets away with most stuff. It’s still failed history though. To start off with, the movie turns Commodus’ 13 year reign into 2 years, then there’s the fact that Commodus was younger than depicted (and a lot fitter), and the idea of him wanting to commit patricide is absurd and has no historical basis whatsoever.

2. Braveheart: Pretty much reinvents history. For starters, King Edward didn’t institute the primae noctis (which supposedly allows British officer to deflower new brides first). Secondly, Scottish rebels wouldn’t have worn kilts. Then there’s the fact that Edward would have been 13 at the time when the film’s set. . . oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. . .

  1. 1.       Jaws: All right fine, so it’s kinda based on the shark attacks of 1916 and yeah, sharks can bite stuff. . . but really, you’d have to be insane to think that Jaws comes close to resembling a real life shark.

See, some true story  films aren’t very true at all. Thankfully, a lot of them are still brilliant. So, let’s take a look at the top 20 best true story films of all time. Hit NEXT.

Master in Philosophy Master Yoda’s Quotes from Star Wars

1x1.trans Master in Philosophy Master Yoda’s Quotes from Star Warsmovie features star wars                                       1x1.trans Master in Philosophy Master Yoda’s Quotes from Star Warsmovie features star wars

The trait of a truly great movie is to be able to be watched purely for fun, while also presenting meaningful meditations on life. I remember at acting school being told that it’s what a viewer takes away with them that matters, the inspiration they receive long after the actual movie is finished. I’m sure something similar is said at film school.

With Star Wars, we get moments of pure, light-hearted family entertainment (like those moments featuring R2-“d and C3PO) mixed with moments that make the film look like a masters degree in philosophy, moments of insight and inspiration that last forever.

It’s the second part of Star Wars, the philosophy, we’re looking at here, as we present the philosophy of Yoda in quotes.

Yoda Quote 1: A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind.

Yoda’s beliefs state that a person should commit with all their mind to that which they believe in, as is stated in this Yoda quote. This point is later backed up by Yoda telling Luke to “unlearn what you have learned.” Only by removing our biased view of the world can we truly commit to the truth and to our beliefs.

1x1.trans Master in Philosophy Master Yoda’s Quotes from Star Warsmovie features star wars

Yoda Quote 2: Ohhh! Great warrior! Wars not make one great!

Yoda firmly believes that the only thing worth fighting for is peace. He is against the idea of their being glory in war, as he states with this quote.

The Life Force and Oneness of All Things

Many different religions and spiritual groups believe in the universal life force – an energy that transcends space and time and holds all life forms together, creating oneness. Yoda reveals his belief in this energy when he states. ..

Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force.

1x1.trans Master in Philosophy Master Yoda’s Quotes from Star Warsmovie features star wars

Being Mindful and in the Moment

Perhaps the most popular spiritual practice is that of meditation. The idea of meditation is that it connects people to the present moment. Yoda instructs Luke to be mindful in The Empire Strikes Back. He speaks about Luke’s lack of mindfulness with this quote. . .

This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away… to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing.

Why Star Wars is One of the Best Movies for Kids of All Time

There are some classic movies that feel optional, that feel that, if you haven’t seen them, so what? There are loads of classics, right? In fact, there are so many classics that you could probably spend half your life catching up on them. But there is only one Star Wars. sure, it might not be the number one film according to the film institute, and it might not be the most studied movie in film schools, but it’s the most popular movie for the audience members themselves.

There’s a reason why this Star Wars movie poster from 1997 is still searched for by thousands of people online, and why the movies are some of the most popular movie rentals online– because Star Wars is possibly the number one classic movie of al time1x1.trans Star Wars Characters | Celebrating Star Wars Before Disney Checks In uncategorized movie features star wars kids

Star Wars, truth be told, isn’t like other classic movies. There’s a reason why Star Wars has made more than 27 BILLION dollars. It’s because it ignites peoples’ imagination. That’s why Star Wars went from being just a movie to being a complete industry in itself. Movies, games, books, action figures, posters, credit cards . . . whatever it is, Star Wars sells it. You don’t have to be a film school student to know that Star Wars is one of if not the best movie of all time.

Star Wars captivates audiences in a way that absolutely no other movie has in history. And there’s a very good reason for that, in fact, there are a ton of very good reasons for that.

First off, the characters. The characters of Star Wars are based on Jungian analytical psychology theories, but heck, you don’t need a degree in psychology to appreciate them. Simply put, every major character in Star Wars really represents something. From the greedy powerful Emperor to Luke, the man who was just a boy living on a farm in Tatooine who followed his dream to become a hero and save the galaxy, to the independent smuggler Han Solo; everyone in Star Wars means something, and they all inspire audiences in their own way.

Then there’s the classic good VS evil story in which Luke is tempted by the bad side but sticks to the good. The reason Star Wars’ good VS evil story is so powerful is because it shows how fine a line there is between good and bad and how strong one needs to be to stick to the good side. This is a classic story theme in film, with hundreds of film production companies relying on the power of the Good VS Evil story to sell movies.

Then there’s Leia, one of the best female role model characters the movies have to offer. There are very very few female heroes who offer better role models to young women than Leia does. She’s noble, honourable, loyal but independent. Leia teaches young viewers to stand up for what you believe in, to fight for what you know is right. It’s a powerful inspiration Leia makes on viewers, and an important one.

Luke’s feeling blue as he knows that Leia was really the star of the movie all along

1x1.trans Star Wars Characters | Celebrating Star Wars Before Disney Checks In uncategorized movie features star wars kids

But if the reasons above aren’t enough to convince you that Star Wars is one of the best movies for kids, then how about the simple fact that Star Wars is Star Wars:  it’s THE CLASSIC OF CLASSICS. If you don’t know Star Wars, you don’t know movies, its that simple.

The Benefit of Watching Star Wars for Parents and Kids

There are so many benefits that Star Wars offers to kids, but perhaps the most important is the fact that Star Wars is like a master class in using your imagination. You can’t watch Star Wars without having your imagination ignited. It’s a creative powerhouse that makes you gaze up at the stars in wonder. Anyone who hasn’t watched Star Wars needs to, including younger audiences.

Which version of Star Wars is the best for your kids?

If you’re going to be picking up a copy of Star Wars to watch with kids, it really is worth spending just a little extra to get the audio commentaries, in which George Lucas and co discuss how the movies were made. This helps kids to understand the process of brining your imagination to life, a valuable lesson. The version I’ve chosen here includes the lengthy making-of documentary which will teach both kids and adults an awful lot about using the imagination and being creative.

Best Movies For Kids — Lion King, Toy Story and Labyrinth

Continuing our coverage of the best movies for kids, we now come to Labyrinth, Toy Story and The Lion King.

Best Movies For Kids — Labyrinth

1x1.trans Best Movies For Kids Lion King, Toy Story and Labyrinthmovie features kids

Jim Henson / George Lucas’ Labyrinth is one of the most memorable fantasy movies of all time. It tells of fifteen year old Sarah, who inadvertently wishes for Toby, her half-brother, to be taken away to the Goblin King Jareth, with whom Toby will stay unless Sarah can complete the Labyrinth in 13 hours.

You can likely tell from that introduction that Labyrinth carried the message “be careful what you wish for,” but it also does a lot more than that.

Sarah is a strong female character who is a good role model for kids and particularly girls. Sarah leads young viewers through lessons about growing up and about facing your fears through the power of the mind.

Why Labyrinth is one of the best movies for kids

Labyrinth provides a good, strong female role model and teaches children many life lessons, including being careful what you wish for.

Best Movies For kids — The Lion King

1x1.trans Best Movies For Kids Lion King, Toy Story and Labyrinthmovie features kids

The Lion King is, without doubt, one of Disney’s greatest movies ever and one of the be movies that children can watch.

There are so many different life lessons that The Lion King teaches. To begin with, it inspires viewers to recognise the beauty, majesty and importance of the natural world. There are many negative influences in the world that act to damage our view of nature; movies like The Lion King, conversely, do a great job in making us respect nature.

The Lion King also teaches about death. Mufasa’s death is one of the saddest moment in Disney films, and it’s handles with sensitivity and intelligence. It also catapults Simba into what is quite likely the most important lesson of the movie: it teaches Simba (and therefore viewers too) to take responsibility for themselves and to recognise their own importance, which is what Simba does when he returns to the Pride Lands to face Scar.

Finally, the song “The Circle of Life” is full of great lessons. It essentially teaches humility (it states that nature and natural order is god and the we must, as Mufasa says, “Take our place in the circle of life.”

There’s then other moments like when Rafiki teaches Simba not to focus on the past. The Lion King is simply packed with life lessons. I could go on and on but it’s better to just watch it with your kids.

Why The Lion King is one of the best Movies for Kids

The Lion King will leave the indelible understanding that life is grand and that we are but one part of it, but that we must also recognise our own importance and live our lives as best we can.

Best Movies For kids — Toy Story

1x1.trans Best Movies For Kids Lion King, Toy Story and Labyrinthmovie features kids

Just like The Lion King, Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story is literally packed full of important life lessons. Perhaps the best place to start is with the fact that Toy Story inspires the imagination.

It’s pretty easy to recognise how Toy Story inspires kids to use their imagination. Simply watch Toy Story with a kid then give them a toy. The results speak for themselves.

Of course, the inspiration of Toy Story extends far beyond making kids think toys are alive. One of Toy Story’s primary inspirations lies in the relationship between Woody and Buzz Lightyear. The two protagonists of Toy Story start off as enemies, bickering back and forth, unable to get along. Through the course of the story, Buzz Lightyear and Woody then become friends, settling their differences, learning to see eyes to eye and to work as a team. Naturally, this inspires children to adopt more positive relationships with other children by encouraging them to get along.

Why Toy Story is one of the best movies for kids

Simple, Toy Story teaches children to get along with each other, to recognises their similarities rather than differences and to take responsibility for one another.

The Best Movies For Children : The Neverending Story

Continuing our list of the best movies for children we now come to The Neverending Story, a movie packed full of valuable life lessons including dealing with bereavement, finding personal courage and facing fears.

1x1.trans The Best Movies For Children : The Neverending Storymovie features kids

Why The Neverending Story is one of the best movies for kids

The Neverending Story is one of the most unique movies of all time. I can remember perfectly the first time I saw The Neverending Story. I can remember crying my eyes out when the horse Artax dies in the swamp of sadness. I remember the numerous ways in which The Neverending Story inspired me.;

The Neverending Story covers a wide range of important issues. The issues range from bullying to mental health issues to bereavement, to love, to courage and personal bravery. The Neverending Story is literally packed full of positive psychology.

Here’s the really sad death of Artax in The Neverending Story.

Clearly, this is an extremely sad scene, yet it is also an extremely important scene and especially for kids. What follows is having to learn to cope with loss, to find the personal courage to go on alone. It’s not easy viewing for kids, but its positive viewing.

1x1.trans The Best Movies For Children : The Neverending Storymovie features kids

How watching The Neverending Story will Benefit Kids

The Neverending Story, as discussed above, will provide important messages on many of the most important issues that kids (along the rest of us) have to face. It’s also a great movie with terrific fantasy elements which will inspire your child’s imagination.

Two Teens Recreate Disney Pixar’s Toy Story in Live Action

I thought I was a fan of Disney and Toy Story, but I’ve been put to shame by two high school students from Arizona who have reproduced the first Toy Story movie in its entirety in their own bedrooms.

It took the two teenagers years of hard work to produce this 120 minute long live-action version of Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story. To do it, they had to transform their own bedrooms into replicas of the scenes from Toy Story

Pixar have yet to comment on the film, but it’s already got more than 1.5 MILLION Youtube views and 1,000 Facebook likes.

Pauley, one of the film’s producers, stated, “After seeing ‘Toy Story,’ I started playing with my toys differently,” he said. “I really made them alive.”

What Richard Did — An Intelligent Drama About Social and Familial Responsibility

Irish Director Lenny Abrahamson Show His Brilliance in What Richard Did

1x1.trans What Richard Did An Intelligent Drama About Social and Familial Responsibilitymovie review

If originality and creativity are to be praised, then Irish director Lenny Abrahamson deserves rapturous applaus for his first three major productions: they all look completely different. Where many directors seem to like to stick to one type of film, Abrahamson is more interested in pushing himself and creating a genuinely unique peace of work each time he directs.

The latest of his works is What Richard Did, a complex drama written by Malcolm Campbell and starring Jack Reynor, Sam Keeley and Roisin Murphy. The story is about Richard, a teenage male played by Jack Reynor. Richard is an over-achiever and a rugby star schoolboy. Everywhere he goes he gets the adoration of the girls, he has parties and present himself as a celebrity. It’s the dream lifestyle, at least until he falls for Roisin Murphy, the girlfriend of his fellow teammate Conor (Sam Keeley).

What Richard Did is an intelligent drama that speaks of social and familial responsibility. It has a lot to say, and says all of it with meaning and intent. This is a movie that will make you think.

Review of Gangster Squad, Starring Sean Penn

Ruben Fleischer’s work was never really regarded for its maturity nor its earnestness. Before Gangster Squad the Washington-born director had mostly worked on cheesy comedies like Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less. Now, Fleischer has made a move to further his career and launch him into a more serious directorial landscape with this, his first really mature movie, Gangster Squad.

Gangster Squad Review

Gangster Squad is based on a true story about a group of incorruptible cops up against a mobster in Brooklyn in Los Angeles in the 1940s. It stars Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen, the creepy and evil mobster. Sean Penn plays the role with a lot of hamm behind a lot of prosthetics. Truth be told its not a particularly notable performance than Penn puts in.

Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen in Gangster Squad

1x1.trans Review of Gangster Squad, Starring Sean Pennmovie review

The film itself matches Penn’s performance: it’s entertaining but shallow. There’s a great deal of violence, though the movie does focus on the good guys rather than the bad.

Leading the good guys is Josh Brolin’s Sergeant John O’Mara, whose pregnant wife is at first less than pleased about his work but, almost miraculously, suddenly decides that actually she quite fancies getting into all that crime malarkey. Ryan Gosling is getting it on with Emma Stone, filling that all important romance part.

Probably the biggest plus of Gangster Squad is the accuracy and detail with which is evokes LA in the 1940s. Oh, and there’s some pretty decent dialogue too.

All in all, Gangster Squad is a decent enough flick, though it certainly wont blow you away. Its violent and gritty, but disappointingly shallow.

Overall: 3 out of 5.

Les Miserables Review–Hugh Jackman headed For OSCAR Win

The  musical version of Les Miserables and Victor Hugo’s original novel on which its based have wowed audience and readers for years, telling, very emotionally, the story of the anti-monarchist Paris uprising of 1832. Even non-musical lovers, its impossible not to recognise the brilliance of Les Miserables on stage and the same is true for Tom Hooper’s films, which stars Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. There’s just something about Les Miserables that demands it to be watched.

How could Les Miserables possibly fail? It stars truly exceptional performers in Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and company. It’s directed by The King’s Speech’s Tom Cooper, and it’s Lay Mis.

Hugh Jackman deserves the OSCAR for Les Miersables Jean Valjean

1x1.trans Les Miserables Review Hugh Jackman headed For OSCAR Winmovie review movie review les miserables hugh jackman

Jackman plays Jean Valjean, a decent and noble man imprisoned for stealing bread to save his sister’s family from starvation. When Valjean is released, Crowe’s police officer Javert chases him for breaking parole, but fortunes change when he gains respectability and becomes a mayor. He meets up with Anne Hathaway’s Fintine, a poor employee, whose daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) falls for Marius (Eddie Redmayne). As Valjean prepares for his final face off with Jacert, Paris descends into violence. An uproar ensues that will burn a fire in the belly of all watchers and leave you with the sneaking suspicion that you may just have witnessed an epic.

Les Miserables is coated with sincerity. There isn’t a single scene of the movie that passes by without the viewer being crucially aware of the weight and gravity of the source material. Every note and every line is punched out with meaning and intent.

Of all the powerful scenes in Les Miserables, the opening scene of Valjean stands out as the best. Valjean is taken aback by the charity of the Bishop, who forgives him and offers him protection. As Jackman sings a soliloquy to the camera your heart melts and you are swept up in the emotion of it all.

Though Anne Hathaway puts in a brilliant performance as Fantine, Jackman really is the star of the show. It’s hard to imagine Jackman not receiving an Academy Award for his work here. It would be robbery were he not to win.

Anne Hathaway as Fantine in Les Miserables

Russell Crowe will also wow audiences. His performance is open and honest—one of the best of his career.

All in all, Les Miserables is an epic that simply must be watched, whether you’re a fan of musicals or not. Hugh Jackman has an OSCAR headed his way.  This is one of those movie moments you will always remember.

Overall: 4.5 out of 5.

Star Trek Into Darkness — Dying Fans Wish Comes True

Star Trek into Darkness director JJ Abrams has made a dying fan’s wish come true by allowing him to watch Star Trek Into Darkness months before its release.

1x1.trans Star Trek Into Darkness Dying Fans Wish Comes Truemovie news star trek

It was Christmas day when Reddit user iddeyut (Grady Hendrix) made a wish via reddit for his friend Dan, a 41 year old cancer sufferer, to be able to see Star Trek Into Darkness. Knowing that his friend had just weeks to live, he had bough a ticket to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey simply to catch the 10 minute preview to Stark Trek Into Darkness. That day, Dan was sent to hospital, meaning he missed the preview.

Spreading online, the story of Dan and Grady reached Paramount and JJ Abrams, who naturally wanted to do all they could to help Dan. They set up a private viewing for the cancer sufferer and his wife and they watched the film on Sunday.

It speaks much about Paramount and Bad Robot that they opted not to make a big thing about the screening. Rather. Dan’s wife sent the following message to TrekMovie.com:

“Hi everyone, it’s Daniel’s wife. We are of course sworn to secrecy, but we are officially allowed to say we saw it and we enjoyed it immensely as a film and as a gesture… However; Daniel ‘hates’ being an ‘inspiring cancer story’ we his friends and loved ones would prefer for the update to have more of a heartfelt message of giving, especially during this season

“This is a story of us giving something to him, the ‘internet’ community giving something to him and ultimately being a heartwarming gift to our friends, family and so many others. This story of us (and of course JJ Abrams & Bad Robot) being able to give this surprise gift of a screening to a huge movie buff like Daniel, especially a film made by a film maker who obviously makes movies with such care, with a fan like Daniel in mind (and a person like me who knows slightly less about these things). Also, it was truly amazing that a film-maker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to show this to us.

“It is also so wonderful for his friends & his family to finally hear some good news from us, They know how important film is to Daniel & could not think of a better way to please to him. So this gesture really has brought a lot of smiles all around.

“Be assured we enjoyed it 110%! We are so grateful thank you, thank you, thank you…”

. . .  not often do the movies warm your heart like this.
