The Bourne Legacy Blu Ray DVD Review
When penned by Robert Ludlum, the Bourne series were a staggering, exhilarating feast of thriller novels that very few authors could match. Naturally, that was something of a problem for Eric Van Lustbader—the author who took over from Robert Ludlum on Bourne. Lustbader would pen sever Bourne titles, but never quite capture the same brilliance as Ludlum’s works.
The Bourne Legacy is the first of Eric Van Lustbader’s titles, originally released in 2004 and having seen a cinematic release earlier in 2012.
Director Tony Gilroy clearly intended to take Bourne back to basics. To this end, The Bourne Legacy takes a simple, linear storytelling format that (perhaps predictably) is enjoyable, if never quite earth-shatteringly thrilling. There’s much entertainment to be had, but it’s not on-the-edge-of-your-seat-entertainment.
The main problem with The Bourne Legacy is the fact that Tony Gilroy has turned folks like Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross into a sort of mindless cyborg by making them reliant on taking a pill. It’s a horrendous plot decision that seems to turn the agents into a steroid-taking-zombie-of-sorts. This smashes the realism of the characters and rather bludgeons the believability of the story.
What we’re left with is an entertaining movie with some quality action, but one which leaves a sour taste in the mouth as it fails to meet the lofty expectations set by its predecessors.
The good news about the Blu Ray version of The Bourne Legacy is that in both visuals and audio it packs a punch. There’s a definite blockbuster feel about this disc that will send your home theatre system through the roof.

The Bourne Legacy DVD Features
It always feels slightly strange to me when a bonus feature is better than the main movie. that’s definitely the case here. The audio commentary with Gilroy, writer Dan Gilroy, editor John Gilroy, DP Robert Elswit, second unit director Dan Bradley, and production designer Kevin Thompson puts the movie to shame. In fact, if you’re a real movie buff, it’s worth grabbing the disc for this feature alone. Each participant in the commentary offers some very interesting details about the making of the movie, the challenges and the problems they faces.
Sadly, the same can’t be said for the rest of the features: Moving Targets: Aaron and Marta, Capturing Chaos: The Motorbike Chase, Enter Aaron Cross , Re-Bourne, , Crossing Continents: Legacy on Location, and Man vs. Wolf are minimal and lacklustre.
The Bourne Legacy Overall: Up, down, up, down. . . The Bourne Legacy hits highs and lows one after another. An enjoyable film that could have been more with one great feature among a bunch of duds. The Bourne Legacy is far from the worst disc you’ll pick up today, but it’s also far from the best.

Movies like The Dark Knight Rises #1 : The Matrix:
One of my own (and many many other people’s) favourite movies of all time, if you look up “Epic” in the dictionary of movies, The Matrix comes up top. It shares The Dark Knight Rises’ mixture of dark mood and awesome action. If, somehow, you have yet to see it, watch it now.
Spiderman really got me back on board the comic-book-movie wagon. With a great story, great action and great characters played excellently by a great cast, there’s a heck of a lot to like about Spiderman.
Movies like The Dark Knight Rises #3: X-Men
Probably my favourite element of The Dark Knight Rises is its indulgent stock of brilliant characters. A comic book movie is nothing without characters, and no comic book movie has more or better characters than X-Men. Between Wolverine, Cyclops, Professor X, Jean and the rest of the X-Men, there’s a character here for everyone, making it a movie all can enjoy.
