It’s hard losing weight. And one of the main reasons why it’s so flipping complex is that every so often out minds seem possessed with a voice calling us to have a cookie, a cake, some chocolate or some other sweet and fattening food.
A lot of the time we can deal with it. Most times, the voice of candies and cakes call to us but we’re able to silence them. These are the good times, when we feel inspired and motivated to lose weight. But then there are those time when we’re stressed. We just want to get away. We want the sweet goodness and comfort of fatty food.
The problem is that we’ve learnt to use food as a way of dealing with stress. So inevitably, when we’re stressed, we eat and put on weight and undo all the good we’d done on our weight loss programs. Urggghhhh.
Sugar Addiction And Weight in America
An average American will eat 156 lbs of sugar each year. That’s only a little less than my body weight.
We’re consuming more soft drinks; 500% more than we did in the 40s, says the US Department o Agriculture Study from 1999.
Science has proven that too much sugar lads to high plaque deposits in arteries, colon cancer, breast cancer and too much LDL cholesterol.
. . . okay, so sugar’s bad. But what the heck can we do about it? Sugar is an addiction, isn’t it?
There’s actually a lot of debate going on about whether or not sugar is actually addictive. Self help books say it is. Science says lots of stuff, of which the following are the most interesting points. . .
Interesting Facts About Sugar Addiction
Neuroscientists conducting studies using fMRI scans have shown leads to the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens (which is basically a part of the brain related to reward and motivation).
Research conducted by Nora Volker at the National Institute for Drug Abuse have shown that there’s a correlation between the brains of obese people and drug addicts.
Rats, when deprived of food then given food with sucrose, start bingeing.
Research has shown that sugar changes dopamine receptor. This means that you need more sugar to get a pleasant feeling. Hence why overweight people on weight loss plans can feel depression – they’re not consuming enough sugar for their dopamine receptors.
So, it seems sugar is addictive. The more we have the more we need, and if we don’t have it we feel depressed. So where the heck is the answer? It seems there are two choices: 1) go cold turkey, which will inevitably make you miserable for a while but will work for those willing or 2 ) gradually decrease consumption, which will make you less miserable but take longer.
We have to accept that giving up sugar will affect our mood. And so I suppose the best advice, tough as it may sound, is o grin and bear it.
How Can We Beat Sugar Addiction To Succeed in a Weight Loss Plan?
The best way to quit smoking is to quit smoking naturally. You don’t want to be hooked on Nicotine patches any more than you want to be addicted to smoking cigarettes. But how do you quit smoking naturally without using a quit smoking product?
How To Quit Smoking Naturally
One of the best answers ways of quitting smoking naturally is through a special breathing technique.
You already know precisely how to do this breathing technique. It’s the exact same type of breathing you do while smoking.
How Smoking Changes Your Breathing
For the smoker, there a two main types of breathing. There’s regular breathing and “smoking breathing.”
For a smoker, “regular breathing” is usually shallow, You breathe unhealthily because smoking has damaged your body. Unfortunately, breathing shallowly in itself causes stress (when we are stressed we shallow breathe; when we are relaxed we breathe deeply).
So, we smoke, which causes our breathing to be shallow. Breathing shallow makes us stressed. When we are stresses we smoke.
But what is “Smoking Breathing?”
Smoking breathing, in many ways, is healthy, once you take away the cigarette.
Consider the way you breathe when you smoke.
You focus on the breath (or smoke) coming in through your mouth.
You breath deeply. You focus on the breathing.
Having inhaled, you then hold the breath momentarily before slowly exhaling.
This is how you breathe when you smoke. You already know this. What you might not know is that the way in which you breathe when you smoke is near identical to taking a healthy breath. More than this, it’s near identical to how meditation practitioners breathe when meditating.
How to Breathe While Meditating
Here on ARoleModel.com I write a lot about meditation. The number one way of breathing when meditating is by focussing on the breath. You do so in this manner:
Focus on the inhalation.
Take a deep breath.
Calmly observe your breath entering your body
At the end of the inhalation pause momentarily.
Gradually breathe outwards, keeping your attention on your breath.
That’s right, meditational breathing is the exact same as smoking breathing, only without the cigarette.
How To Quit Smoking Naturally
The next time the stress of shallow breathing causes you to need a cigarette, stop and think. You don’t need a cigarette in order to “smoke breathe.” Just use the meditational breath instead. This will relax you and produce the exact same effect as smoking only without the horrendous side effects of smoking.
Did you know that Facebook is commonly making people feel depressed?
Every day, Facebook users are searching Facebook using the following search terms .. .
“Facebook makes me feel depressed.”
“Facebook makes me feel sad.”
“Facebook makes me jealous”
“Facebook makes me insecure”
“Facebook makes me feel lonely. . . “
People are even saying that Facebook makes them fat!
Now, I’m not sure about the last one. But what I do know for a fact is this: Facebook is one of the leading causes of depression in the world.
Yup, of all the reasons to feel depressed, Facebook is one of the absolute most common.
There’s no wonder Facebook makes us feel depressed. We see friends updates all day showing how they’re all socialising, going to events, doing cool things.
But if you’re feeling lonely on Facebook, let me assure you that you most definitely are not alone. In recent research, it was shown that 44% of all Facebook users feel depressed during their visit to the site. Of the reasons for their depression, the most common were:
Why Facebook Makes You Feel Depressed, Jealous and Lonely
1) Feeling jealous of Facebook friends who are (supposedly, according to their statuses) doing all manner of cool things.
2) Another leading causes of Facebook depression was having too many friends who we don’t actually know.
The leading cause of Facebook related depression is comparing yourself to other people. Even though we know that most status updates are either a) complete BS or b) exaggerations of the truth, it seems near impossible not to compare ourselves to others.
Then there’s the Facebook profile picture. 99% of people on Facebook have happy pictures. We see these happy pictures all the time and presume that other people are always happy. This then makes us feel bad for not being hapy 100% of the time ourselves.
So, what can we do to stop feeling depressed and jealous on Facebook?
How To Stop Feeling Depressed, Lonely and Jealous on Facebook.
Use Facebok Less: Pretty obvious tip this one. Simply limit the amount of time that you’re on Facebook. The less the better.
Be Honest with Yourself: When you feel depressed on Facebook, remind yourself that it is Facebook itself that’s making you depressed. Also remind yourself of all the facts we discussed above. You’re far from the only person feeling depressed on Facebook and it’s important to remember that fact.
Face the BS and dance: Remind yourself that 99% of what you’re seeing on Facebook is either complete rubbish or an exaggeration on the truth. People’s status update are very rarely 100% accurate and honest.
Think Positively: Any time you’re on Facebook and a negative thought arises, challenge the thought and think positive. If a friend is doing something cool tonight and you’re jealous, think “Well, I hope they have a nice time. I went out only a few days ago. I’m more than happy to relax at home tonight.” Challenge negative thoughts with positive ones.
Replace Facebook: Facebook is addictive. It’s designed to be addictive. Facebook makes billions by intentionally making you addicted to the site. That’s why I hope you will try to stop using Facebook as much as possible and replace it with something more positive. Go for a jog. Go talk to friends in the real world. Mediate. Relax. Do something positive that will actually make you feel better.
Tell Your FB Friends You’re Going: Help your friends while you help yourself. Tell your friends you’re leaving Facebook. Give them an alternative and more healthy means of communicating with you. Let them know that you’ve heard that Facebook causes depression and you think it’s a bad thing. Let them know about this article and read it for themselves. Perhaps that way you can inspire others to find a more healthy and positive means of communicating too.
If Facebook does not make you feel more happy and more positive then it should not be a part of your life.
Facebook Makes Us All Feel Depressed, Lonely and Jealous– You’re Not Alone!
What if I told you that the best way to quit smoking cigarettes naturally was to forget all about your efforts to quit smoking cigarettes?
There’s one secret that practically every professional psychologist knows but that next to no one in the health industry wants you to know: it’s impossible to QUIT doing anything.
It’s hard to believe because—well, because most professionals don’t want you to know. They want you to believe that nicotine patches and e cigarettes and other expensive products are the right way to go, because then they’ll get a freaking ton of money.
But sadly, quitting smoking is impossible. For proof, reading this excellent article on Psychology Today.
Yes, quitting smoking is impossible. So, how the heck do you quit smoking without . . . errr. .. quitting smoking?
The answer is to completely change the way in which your thinking about your habit and your life.
Most people when quitting, tell themselves “I need to quit smoking because it’s killing me” or something to that affect. Sadly, such a statement is entirely negative. When you tell yourself that you NEED to quit smoking, invariably, you just end up needing to smoke.
Thinking in the negative is only going to demotivate you. Instead, you need to begin working in the positive, saying things to yourself that make you feel positive.
For instance, when you think “I want a cigarette” change your thought to, “I would like a cigarette, but I would rather stand outside and enjoy some fresh air for five minutes because I know it will lead to better health, longer living and to generally feeling better.”
In this manner, you’re still getting yourself to do something other than smoking, only you’re positively motivating yourself instead of negatively demotivating yourself. It’s a simple change, yet a powerful one.
I discuss this concept in much more detail in my book Smoking Thoughts: Set Your Mind Alight. Inhale Life
It’s a book that reveals precisely how to quit smoking naturally by forgetting about quitting smoking.
But for now, let me leave you with one thought:
EVERYTHING in life should be positive. The right way to change a negative habit isn’t through negative thinking like “I NEED to do THIS or X BAD THING will happen.” Instead, it’s through positive thinking, like “I’m enjoying fresh air and feeling healthy.”
Our online anger management test will tell you whether you’re passive aggressive or not and what to do about it.
The majority of people in the world (or at least in this part of the world) more often than not choose to handle their anger in a negative way – by keeping it inside. When we keep our anger inside it tends to slip out in passive aggressive statements.
The problem with passive aggressiveness is that, by keeping our anger inside instead of truly expressing ourselves, we all negative feelings to build up over a time to a point where it becomes a real problem.
Frequent passive aggressive statements are one of the warning signs and symptoms of depression, as they show that we have built up negative feelings to point where we are losing control of them.
Passive aggressive statements should also be a warning sign to friends and family. Passive aggressiveness is a very bad thing in a relationship, which is why family and marriage counselling classes often focus on it.
To put it simply: if you’re a passive aggressive, you need to release your anger in healthy ways instead of keeping it all inside.
Below is a list of passive aggressive quotes, the type of things passive aggressive people say. If you find yourself saying these types of things often, try to find a more positive way to express yourself so you are not holding negative feelings inside.
The Passive Aggressive Quotes
“Fine, Whatever!”
“Yeah, yeah,”
“I keep telling you, I am NOT ANGRY!!!”
“Well, how was I to know you wanted it done now?”
“How the heck was I to know you wanted it done that way?”
“Can’t You Take a Joke?”
“Jus’ Saying”
Keep an ear out for passive aggressive quotes like this. If you say things like this often, try to express yourself more openly and honestly. If someone isn’t happy with the way you made the dinner (for instance) and you’re angry about it, don’t say, “Fine, whatever. How was I supposed to know you wanted it done like that?” say “I feel angry because I would have preferred for you to tell me how you would like it done before I started making it, so I didn’t waste my time.”
This second statement is more positive for all involved. You’re expressing yourself. You’re letting the other person understand you’re feelings. You’re creating an opportunity to form a closer bond by openly expressing yourself, which also allows for practical solutions (the other person in the example above could easily say, “Oh, okay, maybe we should discuss dinner more often” – problem solved.

So you need a few good ways how to stop thinking too much. Your mind’s been running like a hamster on a ball and it just won’t stop. . . damn hamster. There can be little doubt that Eckhart Tolle is one of the most inspiring people in the world; certainly in the realms of self improvement and spirituality. In a great segment on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, Eckhart Tolle answered the question of how to stop thinking too much. This is great for many reasons: it can help you stop thinking about someone, stop thinking about food, stop thinking negative thoughts and can even get you more connected to life and to the present moment.
As Tolle explains, if you are asking the question “How to stop thinking too much,” and if you are aware of the voice in your head, you are already ahead of the game. Most people don’t realise that they themselves are creating the voice in their head. When hearing a voice in their head saying, “I must do the washing up” (for instance) most people don’t have clear presence to think “There is a voice in my head telling me to do the washing up” they simply think “I HAVE to do the washing up.” This might seem like a small difference, but it is very important. If you recognise that thoughts are just a voice in your head, then you can begin to take control.
So, how to thinking too much. . .
Eckhart Tolle continued his answer to this question with some basic practice of Vipasanna meditation.
To stop your mind, “Choose to take your attention away from thinking. Ask yourself “Can I feel the energy in my hands? There is a tingling or aliveness there. Immediately on focussing on this energy your thinking will slow down because your thoughts don’t have your attention.”
Eckhart Tolle specifies focussing on the hands here, but it doesn’t matter too much exactly what you focus on. A traditional Vipasanna meditation would have you focussing on the breath coming and going through your nose. In my experience, the exact area of focus does not matter too much. What does matter is that you take your focus away from your thoughts and instead focus on something physical. Essentially, you are taking your focus and attention away from those deceptive thoughts and placing it on something more real, something physical. This is the way how to slow your mind and how to silence the thoughts in your head.
With this simple relaxation technique (a meditation for beginners) and the relaxingquotes below, you’ll be feeling completely chilled, calm and relaxed in no time. This relaxation technique works by having you meditate to become completely relaxed, then, once relaxed, you simply read the quotes about relaxation below for complete and total serenity.
Relaxation Technique: Meditation for Beginners
Spend ten minutes (or as long as you can ) performing this exercise and you will feel fresh, new and totally relaxed.
1) Find somewhere quiet where you can relax in peace without being disturbed.
2) Sit down in any position where you are relaxed and comfortable but are not slouching (kneeling down with your back straight or sitting with legs crossed are good examples)
3) Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing. Focus on the air coming and going through your nostrils.
4) If you find it difficult to focus on your breath, help settle your mind by counting the breath. In – count 1 – out – count 2 – in – count 3 – out – count 4
5) Continue to focus on the air coming and going through the end of your nose. Monks will focus on this for long periods of time, but if you have ten minutes to spare then that’s great!
This nostril breathing exercise comes from the book Mindfulness in Plain English . — one of the best books for learning to meditate.
By focussing on your breath in this way you completely relax your mind. With relaxed mind, now is the ideal time to read the following quotes about relaxation. These relaxing quotes will help you find an even calmer state of mind for complete and total relaxation.
Relaxing Quotes about Relaxation
Nothing is permanent in this wicked world – not even our troubles.
Charlie Chaplin
What’s the use of worrying? It never was worthwhile.
George Asaf
To sit in the shade on a fine day, and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment.
Keep asking yourself “Why am I so unhappy?” Then you need to get out of the cycle of unhappiness. Discover the reason you’re unhappy and what to do about it below.
Let me describe to you a time of personal unhappiness in my life, then tell me if it sounds familiar.
There was a time when I would feel like I have nothing and I would want everything. I was hungry. Hungry for women, for money, for success, for fame (I’m an actor so fame is, in this field, almost like a very large promotion—it’s desired). I craved. I would look at the life I had, determine it as not being good enough and then desire more.
At times, I would get more. There were times when, as an actor, I scored roles I really wanted. There were times when I got lucky in love. There were times when I was popular. I had fortune. Sure, I wasn’t a millionaire and I wasn’t a mega movie star, but I had more than enough to be thankful for. The problem? Instead of being thankful all I could thing was “What next?”
Does this sound familiar to you?
In most society’s around the world today, we are made to want more and more and more. I suppose it is the result of capitalism. Companies want to sell more and more products. How do they sell them? By making you want them. You want the iPhone 700 because the iPhone 699 has been out for a good two months now. . .. Advertising, social statutes and the idea of “keeping up with the Jones’” makes us feel like we need more and more and more. And guess where it stops? That’s right, nowhere.
You get the iPhone 700, the laptop with the four billion gigs RAM and the Porsche that only last month seemed like a fantasy, you enjoy them for what. . . a week? Then suddenly they’re not good enough and you want the next thing.
It’s not just products. Some people are the same way about relationships. Some people want new relationships all the time, others just want their relationship to get better and better and better, thinking it’s never good enough.
Nothing ever seems good enough.
Sounds like a recipe for depression to me.
The idea of having more and more and more is never going to lead you or I to happiness. We will never be content while looking for faults in things, while looking for ways things could be better.
“Why I am so unhappy?” you ask.Because you are caught in the cycle or more and more, better and better. And that cycle is not conducive to happiness nor contentment.
Thankfully, there is a way out of this knot. The way out of this knot of unhappiness is easy to understand, yet a challenge in application. The way out of the knot is this:
Realise is it all bullshit.
Yes. It is bullshit. The idea of needing more and more and more is the most absurd, stupid, depressing and fruitless way you could possibly live your life. You will never genuinely be happy while looking for faults, while asking how things could be better, while wondering what comes next, while desiring the next best thing.
So how do you become happy? The answer is to accept life as it is, to focus on the present moment, to live in the here and now.
As I previously stated, that’s an easy idea to comprehend, but it is perhaps not so easy to apply. That’s why I’m suggesting this list of recommended reading on how to let go and live in the present moment. Some of the articles below are 100% free—you can read them here on this site. The remainder are books to purchase. All of these, however, meet the same aim: they instruct in how to live in the present moment, how to stop the cycle of wanting more and more In other words, they instruct how to be happy, now.
Here are the articles and books I recommend.
