Kevin Mchale of Glee: Root for the Underdog with PETA!

1x1.trans Kevin Mchale of Glee: Root for the Underdog with PETA!characters role models Glee is about to begin its fourth season and Artie Abrams (Kevin Mchale) is rooting for the underdog by supporting PETA.

A new PETA advertisement shows Kevin McHale hugging Sophie (his rescue dog) with the title “Adopt, Don’t Buy.”  “I fostered her for a week to see how she worked on the Glee set, and she worked out great,” he says. “A few months later, she’s still mine”.  . He mentioned that Lea Michele Lynch (fellow Glee stars and PETA US spokespeople) inspired his PETA campaign.   He also stresses the need to have animals spayed and neutered.

Every years, thousands of cats and dogs in animal shelters must be euthanized because there aren’t enough good homes for them. Other animals are abandoned on the streets, where they starve to death, get injured or killed by vehicles or fall prey to abuse. Adopting, not buying, is the answer. Also, the best way to minimize the number of homeless cats and dogs is by always having companion animals spayed or neutered.

Kevin McHale joins a long list of celebrities – including Pink, Justin Bieber, Ryan Gosling, Ke$ha, Kellan Lutz and Joss Stone – who have teamed up with PETA and its affiliates to promote kindness to animals.

This is precisely the sort of news that is worth sharing!

What makes this Batman Poster so Iconic?

Why this Dark Knight Rises Poster is so Iconic:

He doesn’t want to be a hero, but is:  Perhaps the most stand-out feature of the image is the contrast between the ears of Batman’s suit and the angle of his face. His face points downwards, a body language gesture of defensiveness which gives the impression that Batman feels the burden of being a hero. This contrasts with the ears, which point to the heavens, providing an angelic image. Together, Batman’s down-turned face and the ears of his suit serve to tell the viewer that he plays the role of a hero, but beneath the mask is a life full of burden.

Chest Open, Legs Apart: Batman’s chest is bared for the world to see and his legs are held far apart, taking up a lot of space. This is a very clear signal of strength and dominance and is largely the element which makes Batman so masculine.

Big. .  .thing: It’s no coincidence that one of the most highlighted areas of his suit happens to be just above his privates. Any body position which highlights this regions sends a signal of masculinity, confidence and sexuality. Any sex appeal of Batman in this image is largely thanks to this one Bat-tool.

Facing away and shrouded in darkness: The black robe enveloping Batman is more than just an extension of his suit. It’s used to shroud him in secrecy and privacy, to hide a part of his body and in doing so suggest that much of Batman’s character is hidden behind the scenes, giving him an air of mystery. Combine this with his body angle, which is turned away from the camera as though he himself is focussed on some other place, and you get a very mysterious and secretive character.

Other elements making this image iconic:

Batman’s arms are peculiarly stiff and unnaturally symmetrical. They serve to frame his body, and in doing so make him more like an action figure and less like a human being.

Batman’s eyes are almost completely black but for the tiniest little dot of light. The eyes being the windows to the soul, this give the impression that Batman’s inner character is buried deep within, like a glistening jewel at the bottom of the ocean.

What stands out to you? Have I missed any elements here? If so, let me know on facebook or twitter (links on the right).

Core Blaze Characters Body Language and Images

Expressive body language in Core Blaze brings the characters to life, and illustrates how we can all use body gestures to express personality.

Animators at games developers have studied people’ movements to the smallest detail. They know how to animate characters in order to present a desired personality, and in this way, the characters they create can actually serve as models of body language. Check out these excellent body language gestures from the Core Blaze trailer for a great example.

Body Language in Core Blaze Characters

1x1.trans Core Blaze Characters Body Language and Imagesbody language 3 characters role models

In this image, the lead character clearly communicates power and strength through his body language. The wide feet give the message that he will stand his ground, the clenched fists around the sword are aggressive, and along with the phallic shaped sword he’s pulling out of the ground, suggest extreme masculinity. The character’s pose also has an air of spirituality, partly thanks to the sun breaking through the clouds, but also because the character’s eyes are closed and his hands are held above his head in a gesture of salutation.

This archer character is showing very sexual body language. The fact that her arms are held wide apart revealing her chest and the line her body is making (as though she is very intentionally pointing towards something) show extreme interest. Then there’s her neck. She’s tilting her head to the side, which is a sexual sign of submission (Marilyn Monroe used this gesture a lot).

If you ever see a girl standing like this (whether she’s so scantily clad or not) take my word for it: she wants you.

If she’s standing in this position, however, she’d probably rather you leave her alone. There are a few key elements to the female character’s body language here. First off, she has her hand covering her torso, which is a sign of defensiveness (meaning she does not want you to come closer).

Hope you found this fun little detour into the body language of gaming characters fun. If you’d like to know some secrets about body language (which can help with communication, whether it’s chatting to someone you’re interested in, going to a job interview or any other conversation) then check out: Body language.

Han Solo: Character Analysis of a Dude

1x1.trans Han Solo: Character Analysis of a Dudebody language 3 characters role models                       1x1.trans Han Solo: Character Analysis of a Dudebody language 3 characters role models

Here at ARoleModel, we love doing character analyses both on fictional characters and   real people. In our analysis we look at diverse aspects of character, like body language, voice and image. Here we look at the character of Han Solo from Star Wars.

1x1.trans Han Solo: Character Analysis of a Dudebody language 3 characters role models

Han Solo’s Body Language

Body language is arguably the single most important tool in communication. Through the Star Wars trilogy, Han perfectly illustrates the body language of a cool and composed character. Want to look confident, self assured and cool? Then Han’s got some secrets to share with you.

Secret 1: Even if some ant-eater-looking green alien is about to shoot you in the face, STILL look cool
The famous scene in IV between Han ans Greedo shows how masterful he is with his body language. Han ‘s about to be shot in this scene, yet he’s still showing all the signs of confidence. His chest is exposed (not covered by his arms), which in body language means he’s feeling comfortable and confident, hes showing part of his palm as though to say “I’ll just tell it like it is, whatever” (showing the palms in body language means a person is open and being truthful)  and he’s even got his foot on the table, which is a dominant sign showing that he’s owning the space. And all while he’s about to be shot. Now if that’s not confidence, I don’t know what is.

Secret 2: Make them think you’re too cool for school, then give them the most joyfully childish smile you can muster. They’ll be putty in your hands.

A charming and very revealing body language gesture is shown by Han Solo at the end of A New Hope when he is receiving his medal. He gives this childlike, big cheeky grin, which completely changes his face. You can tell its a genuine smile by the change around his eyes (for more on this see Smiling Body Language).

And this one moment of childlike joy pays off. The first truly sexual response he gets from Leia happens right after Han gives this smile. She wets her lips (a very clear “come-on” sign). This makes me wonder whether Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher knew that their characters were going to end up together when A New Hope was filmed (if you know this I’d love to hear it on either Facebook or Twitter — links on the top right) . Either way, there can be little doubt that Han has pulled as this point.

Secret 3 : Blink Less:  Have you ever noticed how Han doesn’t ever blink? Everyone else in the movie blinks about ten times more than him, and that significantly helps boost the impression of confidence because high blinking rates are a sign of nervousness.

Secret 4: Get rid of your nerves before you go on stage: There’s a very important moment for Han’s character which happens just before he enters the throne room. He puffs his cheeks out as though excitedly nervous and surprised at the thought of anyone celebrating him. This proves that he actually is just a regular guy after all (though he’s wisely gotten rid of his nerves behind the scenes where no one can see him, that way he can still look cool when he bags his medal).

Han Solo’s Manner of Speaking and Thought

Han’s speech matches his body language perfectly to create a rapport which really brings his character to life.

Effortless wit: Han repeatedly uses highly intelligent sarcasm with ease.

Cute Mistakes: If it weren’t for occassional mistakes Han makes he would appear too perfect, almost inhuman, and would lose much of his charm. Quotes such as “We had a slight weapons malfunction. . . everything’s fine now . . .how are you?” show a vulnerable side which gives him a youthful energy, ultimately making his character more attractive.

Blunt and to the Point: “I’m not in this for your revolution and I’m not in it for you, Princess. I expect to be well paid. I’m in it for the money.” This is just one Han Solo quote which reveals a great depth of inner confidence. He doesn’t mind bearing his soul to the world nor showing both his strengths and weaknesses. This gives him a direct edginess, a bite, which shows that he is always in control of himself, a point he makes perfectly clear himself when he says, “Look, your worshipfulness, I take orders from just one person: Me.”

Possessiveness and Self obsession: Han finds exactly the right balance between being self centred and sociable / compassionate. At times he’s totally self-absorbed and materialistic (he’s angry when anyone speaks ill of the Millenium Falcon and repeatedly makes clearly self centred choices) but also knows his responsibilities and does what he has to do. This makes his character both responsible and a team player but also reserved and somewhat mysterious (because you’re never really sure what’s going on behind the scene with him) .

Reserved: Though Han is certainly not a shy guy, there are some touching moments where he shows reservation. Han makes clear that he’s comfortable with whoever he’s around, but that he’s going to keep himself to himself when he wants to, that he’s going to be in complete control of himself and that he won’t reveal to you any more than he wants to. This side of his character is revealed when he says to Chewie “What are you looking at. I know what I’m doing” and when he shuts Leia up with one word (in the Death Star Leia looks at the Falcon and says “You came in that. You’re braver than I thought,” to which Han simply replies, “Nice.”) The value of this characteristic is that it makes people want to know more about him. When you give too much of yourself to someone too freely, they assume that you haven’t got anything of value to give, but when you intentionally conceal parts of yourself, they assume you’re hiding something valuable. Try subtly suggesting to someone that you’re keeping something from them and watch how desperately they try to find out what it is.

And there we have it: Han Solo: Body language master with the gift of the gab. How could anyone not love him? More importantly, how much do you think people would love being around you were you to take the keys to Han’s character and apply them to life? Hmmmmm. . . makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Rafael Nadal’s Body Language On Court

What makes Rafael Nadal one of the greatest tennis players in the world? What makes Rafael Nadal adored by millions of fans the world over? What is it about his body language, his on-court personality and his spirit that make him so popular and so successful?

Rafael Nadal’s Body Language On-Court

1x1.trans Rafael Nadals Body Language On Courtbody language 3 characters role models

Nadal always has intimidating and very powerful body language on court. He appears as a warrior while playing (which is completely different to how he appears off court). His stance is always wide, he makes his body appear large and imposing and he intentionally goes at his own pace, controlling the speed of play (which tells his opponent that he is in control).

Nadal uses little gestures like running on and off the court when there’s a pause in play to intentionally show how positively energised he is. This gives the impression that he could be at his best for hours on end, which is a threatening message to send to his opponent (who conversely might already be fatiguing).

Finally, Rafael Nadal (though unintentionally) uses a lot of emotion on the court. He’s always making facial gestures that reveal how he’s feeling. This is potentially both a strength and a weakness. On the one hand, it could reveal when he is feeling negatively (which is rare), but it also shows when he is feeling confident (which is far more common). Perhaps the biggest benefit of showing his emotions, however, is that it makes the crowd like him. After all, who wouldn’t prefer to watch a tennis player going through an up-and-down roller-coaster ride of emotions than one who is simply a machine? Nadal’s emotions get the fans on his side, and their support helps to motivate and energise him.

These are the keys to Rafael Nadal’s positive body language on-court, and what’s best about them is that they are things you yourself can do to create your own positive body language. You don’t even have to be a tennis player to make use of them. Here are some hints at how to make use of the body language tools Nadal uses.

  • Making your body appear wide will produce a powerful and often intimidating persona. For more on this see: Body Language of Legs
  • Even if you’re pretty lethargic and stationary a lot of the time, you can make people believe you’re super fit and very energetic by using little bursts of energy here and there when it’s not neccessary (this is what Nadal does when he’s running on and off the court between points. The fact that he’s being energetic when he doesn’t need to be speak volumes).
  • Revealing emotions can help to get people on your side. But it can also show any would-be opponents weaknesses that they can exploit.

How to Have an Image & Persona like Jessie J

Jessie J, so far from going down like a Domino, is rising to the top of the music world. And no wonder, between her meaningful lyrics, expressive body language, inspiring personality and amazing voice, how could anyone not love Jessie J? Here, Arolemodel breaks down exactly what it is that makes Jessie J Jessie J?

Jessie J has a very unique image and persona largely due to her body language, which is evident in videos like Domino and Price Tag

The number one way in which Jessie J creates her image is not through her clothing or even her lyrics. It’s through some brilliant body language. Jessie J (and her team) use very expressive body language to create Jessie J’s aura, and by understanding this body language, you too can create the exact same cool but wild personality. Here’s how.

Jessie J’s Body Language: how she creates her persona

These are the key body language gestures Jessie J uses to create her image. These are not unique to Jessie J (they’re actually archetypal body language) but Jessie J is extremely good at them, making her an excellent model for learning body language to create a persona. Here are the moves Jessie J uses. . .

Arms:
One of the most notable elements of Jessie J’s body language is in the way she exudes a confident and relaxed power through her arms.

Whether they’re reached out wide or just down by her side, they’re never covering her torso. Sounds like a weird detail to note, that; but this simple arm gesture is actually extremely important. It’s through the open chest and extended arms that Jessie J gives an impression of strength, control and confidence. For more on this read: Body Language of arms.

Smile:
Jessie J has an incredibly expressive smile, in two ways. First off, her smile always appears genuine. There’s two reasons for that. The first is that she reveals her teeth (which is one of the easiest ways to make a smile appear real). The second thing about her smile (and the real different maker) is that when she smiles her eyes change. You can read up about why this matters so much here: Body Language Smiles.

There’s one other thing that Jessie J does with her smile which is essential to her character. She often uses a tight-lipped smile. This is incredibly important to her personality because it presents an image of secrecy. Being the kind of person to wear her heart on her sleeve, this one body language gesture allows Jessie to maintain a secrecy that makes people interested in her (who doesn’t love a secret?).

Sharp and Precise Gestures:
How is it that Jessie J is simultaneously able to present an air of complete composure and a wild spirit? Usually, those two character traits would seem contradictory, yet Jessie J pulls it off. How?

Her composure is created through the elegance of her perfect posture. She stands perfectly straight and is often still. But she makes sure to break this composure at times with some extremely expressive poses and faces. The result is that she appears in control and composed but whilst making the viewer wonder what she’s going to do next.

Chin up, Face Foward:
Do you get the impression watching Jessie J that she really really cares about her audience? Me too. But why? Of course the first answer is that she does and that’s probably true, but how do you know she cares about her audience? The answer is that her chin is always up and most of the time (especially performing live) she leans forward. These are basic poses used in body language to show interest. Someone doing these things naturally appears to be interested in others, and this is a gesture Jessie J has down to a tee.

So, how do you create an impression like Jessie J?

The above points show how Jessie J uses body language to create her personality image, and these are all things that you too can do to create a similar effect. Here’s how:

Keep your chest open (which basically means to not have your arms folded or closed over your chest or stomach) to show power and confidence

Smile: You can discover how to create a more genuine smile here: Genuine smiling; but there are a few key things to producing a smile like Jessie J’s. 1) Show your teeth. 2) Assume the correct eye expression (the previous link article will show you how to do this) and 3 ) ‘Occasionally use a tight-lipped smile to show secrecy and make people wonder what you’re up to.

Sharp, Precise Gestures: To appear composed and yet exciting, make sure you first have decent posture and use occasional moments of extreme expressiveness.

Chin up, Lean forward: Keep your chin up, your face forward and your hands away from your face to show that you are interested in other people.

Jim Carrey: Finding Your Life Purpose Changes Your Life

Jim Carrey: Finding Your Life Purpose Changes Your Life

1x1.trans Jim Carrey: Finding Your Life Purpose Changes Your Lifeuncategorized characters role models Jim Carrey. To the average movie goer, the very name Jim Carrey immediately conjures a sense of joviality, laughter and playfulness. Having seen the many funny-faces of Jim Carrey in Dumb & dumber, Ace Ventura, The Mask and more, it is hard to think of Jim Carrey as anything more than the funny man (even after more serious roles in The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and other dramas). Yet in truth, Jim Carrey’s life has been wrought with difficulties. From a troubled and challenging childhood to a lifelong battle against depression, Jim Carrey has fought with all his spirit to find happiness and success and in this battle has crafted a life rife with valuable lessons from which all can glean wisdom. Jim Carrey’s story contains many secrets of success, from finding your life purpose to the power of intention to affirmations; but before we get to those keys to success, let’s take a quick look at where this tragedy-turned-comedy came from and how he worked his way to the top.

Jim Carrey’s Life And Purpose

Life was never much fun for a young Jim Carrey. Living out of a camper van whilst attending high school and holding down full time day shifts at a tire factory at the same time, it’s a wonder he ever found the time to enter comedy, which he did in 1981 when working at Yuk Yuk’s in Toronto.

Of his beginnings in comedy, Carrey has stated that he acted constantly as a child to anyone who would watch, wanting to put a smile on people’s faces and most particularly his mother’s, who struggled from a great deal of illness and pain. In this desire to put a smile on faces, Jim Carrey found his purpose in life, and he soon committed wholeheartedly to his passion, deciding to move to Los Angeles, where he began to work at The comedy Store in 1981. Soon thereafter he happened upon Rodney Dangerfield, who changed Jim Carrey’s fortune when he gave him the opening spot for his show, and opportunity that turned out to be all Carrey needed. From then onwards he rode the comedy wave, scoring the lead in the Lauren Hutton vehicle Once Bitten (1985), and a supporting role in Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), before making a modest splash with his appearance as the alien Wiploc in Earth Girls Are Easy (1988). Next came “In Living Color” (1990) where Carrey made a name for himself with outrageous acts.

This successful TV run led to Carrey being cast in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), followed soon by Dumb and Dumber, and so it was that within this single year Carrey was made a Hollywood mega star, opting to stick to his guns for most of the 90s before taking a pay cut in order to star in the more serious movie, The Truman Show. This risk, of course, paid off, leading Jim Carrey to become one of the most respected and highest paid actors in Hollywood.

Secret of his Success

Finding Purpose in Life: Though it is more than obvious both from the man himself and his work, it bears repeating that Jim Carrey has always had one purpose and he has stuck to it through thick and thin. The purpose–at once as beautiful as it is simple–is to make people smile. He knew that was his purpose when he was a child and he followed it each and every day of his life from being a down-and-out kid to one of the biggest stars in film history.

Affirmations: Jim Carrey’s official biography reveals that in 1984 Carrey wrote a cheque to himself post-dated ten years. This is a classic example of a visual affirmation.

The basic idea behind an affirmation is that the person continually feed a positive message to themselves. By having a cheque for 10 million dollars post-dated ten year, Carrey was essentially telling himself each and every day that “In 1994 I will have $10million.” Affirmations like this are a staple part of self improvement / self help practice and, whether or not one believes in such things, it is worth noting that ten years after he wrote this cheque Carrey was cast in the two movies that made him who he is today (Dumb & Dumber and Ace Ventura). It is also worth noting that the writing of this cheque must have been of high emotional importance to Jim carry, as he put it in his father’s pocket after his father passed away. This is important for two reasons. Firstly, it proves that the writing of the cheque was a very big deal to Carrey, and it also illustrates the importance of using an affirmation fuelled by genuine emotion (emotional affirmations have a much greater effect on the individual using the affirmation).

The Power of Intention(the belief that everyone is in complete control of everything that happens to them in their lives and life occurs inside of us rather than outside). This is the subject of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s “The Power Of Intention.”

Meditation: Jim Carrey has publicly announced that he found spiritual awakening via the meditation teachings of Echart Tolle.

Snoop Dogg: How To Sell Yourself

The perfect role model for how to sell yourself? That would be Snoop Dogg.

Alright, let’s get one thing straight, Mr S-to-the-N-double-O-P Snoop Doggy Dogg (aight!) isn’t a role model for much. Drugs, pornography, crime… without doubt he is not your model citizen, but arolemodel.com firmly believes that everyone has at least one good side and that there are valuable lessons to be learnt from us all and so we take a look at this rap icon in…

Snoop Dogg: How To Sell Yourself

And indeed, Snoop Dogg, for all his negatives, has one hell of a positive. That positive is his ability to extract every tiny fibre of his personality and turn it into a marketable product. Snoop Dogg is one of the world’s number one illustrations for how to sell yourself, and by following his lead we can all begin to make the most of what we have, learning to truly sell ourselves and turning minimal assets into a potential million dollar product.

But before we take a close look at just exactly how to sell yourself like Snoop Dogg, lets take a look at this rap star’s life and remind ourselves that if he can do it, we can too. Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.–Mr Snoop Doggy Dogg as he is more popularly known– began life as a poor kid. Born on October 20th 1971 inLong BeachCalifornia, he is the son ofVietnam veteran Vernall Varnado, who is said to have been absent for much of Snoop’s life. Perhaps this is why Snoop Dogg turned to music, beginning by singing inGolgothaTrinityBaptistChurch, then learning to play piano before getting into rap during the sixth grade.

Snoop Dogg — Knowing how to sell yourself saved his life

Snoop Dogg got involved with Crime whilst at high school and was convicted for cocaine trafficking. This began a term of Snoop Dogg’s life in which he was often coming or going to / from jail for being involved in all sorts of drug issues.

In 1992 he began recording and it is at this time that he came into success via a very positive quality that is the main subject of this article: self marketing.

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. took every morsel of his being and used it as the paint with which to create the image of a star, namely the rap star called Snoop Dogg. that is the very essence of how to sell yourself.

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. glorified and unified his hair, his clothes, his attitude, his voice and his beats into an image larger than life, an image that personified the word “hustle,” an image that spoke volumes to anyone wanting to fight to turn their life around, an image of a disadvantaged life turned glorious success.   Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. turned the scraps of his life into a modern day icon, making the absolute most of even the most minute detail. And how positive a quality is this? It is the perfect illustration of how to sell yourself.

Most of us believe we don’t have enough to succeed, that we need more money, better looks, more friends, we believe that success will come later, that the time isn’t right, that we don’t have a chance. Unlike Snoop Dogg’s trait of turning everything into gold chains, most of us actually depreciate our assets. By negativity we actively limit the strength of our resources and so make ourselves less likely to succeed. And even if we believe we have positives, we usually think they’re not enough. Snoop Dogg, for all his many negatives, took what little he had and sold the hell out of it, turning a low life into the life of one of the world’s most unique stars.  And so it is that Snoop Dogg becomes a role model example of appreciating what you have and of making the absolute most of it, and for this writer, and hopefully for yourself too, dear reader, that is one hell of an important lesson to learn.

How To Sell Yourself Like Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg’s Secrets to Success: Valuing every single thing one has.

Turning all assets into one very unique and highly marketable product.

How to Achieve This Lesson in How to Sell Yourself

This falls into a few parts. First, off, it is necessary to see one’s assets in the first place before they can be used / sold. Doing so, for some, will be very hard, largely because many of us have deeply ingrained in our psyche the notion that by ourselves we are not enough, or, in other words, we suffer from low self esteem. Check to see if you  suffer from any of these low self esteem symptoms.  If you do suffer from the low self esteem symptoms, arolemodel.com has a great many articles you should consider reading, which can be found here:  self improvement guide.

Once you are confident enough to have an open mind about your assets, try practicing mindfulness meditations based around your possession, qualification, personality and appearance (or whatever else is relevant to your aim). This will help you to really see how much you have at your disposal.

The next step is the hardest. Once one is aware of their assets one must develop enough creativity to turn those assets into a valuable product. To that end, there are a million different mental techniques one can employ to develop their creativity. Many of the best are covered in here: Your Creative Brain

Thinking Outside The Box with Shia LaBeouf

1x1.trans Thinking Outside The Box with Shia LaBeoufuncategorized characters role models According to The Telegraph,  ”"Thinking outside the box is the most despised business jargon.” And to be fair, one can see why. After all, many employees rifle off routine comments about “thinking outside the box” on such creative tasks as sending a fax. Yes, for many, “Thinking outside the box” is nothing but a buzz-phrase to try (and fail) to impress those higher up the ladder, and what a shame that is for, were people to actually utilise the power of genuinely thinking outside the box they might quite quickly find a shortcut from zero to hero, from £5 an hour to £100 an hour from failure to success

[/wpcol_1half]

One man who certainly recognises the power of thinking outside the box is 25 year old mega star Shia Lebeouf (Transformers, Disturbia, who learnt the value of creative thinking at a very young age.  [br] [br] Leboeuf was born the son of a Vietnam vet father who never held a steady job and an artist / ballerina mum. At age ten he decided he wanted to become a successful actor and spent very little time achieving that aim. He grabbed himself a copy of the yellow page,  found a casting agent  and called her up, pretending to be his own manager. The agent fell for it and hired him. ““She became one of the few pillars in my life,” LaBeouf told Parade. “She lifted me up and cared for me. She said, ‘Hey, kid, see that mountain? Go move it!’” The rest is history. .  .ore than history, however, it’s an amazing example of why you should begin thinking outside the box.

Now, in this instance it is rather likely that Shia laBeouf’s move came more from childish innocence and naivety than from genuine creative thought, but nevertheless, what is important is that he was able to see a pathway to success that most other actors would not. In this way, he succeeded by thinking outside the body. Rather than thinking “I need to learn to act. Then I need to apply for some roles and build up some credits. Then I’ll go to an interview etc etc” a young Shia Labeouf simply thought “I want an agent to give me big roles” and so called them up. Essentially, he was able to see a pathway no one else saw, and he  used that creative thought, that way of thinking outside the box, to launch a very successful career, and, more importantly for this article and site, and also for you, dear reader, is the clear illustration Shia Labeouf provides of the value of being able to think outside the box. After all, were it not for this one creative move, it is likely Shia Labeouf would be in a similar position to the average actor, poor and struggling (after all, he is neither overly good looking nor tremendously talented– a decent actor but far from being a master of the craft).

Let us summarise Shia LaBeouf’s secrets to thinking outside the box (in order that we might learn to copy them and emulate his success. Hurrah!)

Secrets to his Success: On the one hand, he quite blatantly cheated the system, broke the rules and deceived his way to the top (though being a kid he obviously did not do thisintentionally). And he was very lucky that the agent liked it (many would have acted very differently and possibly ruined his name). However, the simple fact of the matter is that he was able to see a different route to success (a much more direct and easier one!) and this took him to the top.

How to Achieve It: First off, if you’ve got an aim in mind you’re struggling with you might do well to question just how unbreakable certain rules are. You would also do well to learn to genuinely think outside the box. Here are some suggestions.

Thinking Outside The Box Exercise

1. Continually learn new subjects and skills. You will be surprised how much of one skill can be applied to another, and you will likely find new ideas in this way.

2. Broaden your taste in entertainment and art. If you love pop, listen to rock, rap, classical etc. Love romance? Watch horror. Different arts and entertainment will naturally encourage you to think in different ways.

3. Think metaphorically. Being to consider how different objects and elements relate to each other. to give a classic example (thanks Bruce Lee) consider how water might relate to a person’s character. “‘Thinking outside the box’ is most despised business jara“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

4. Work backwards. being at the attainment of your goal and work your way back. To give the Shia LaBeouf example: I’m starring in movies. An agent gave me those roles. imcalling an agent… picks up yellow pages.

5. Act like a child. Children are always very playful, very open minded, looking for new ways to use their toys etc. Encourage your more playful side.

Thinking outside the box is a skill to be gradually developed. Begin to start thinking outside the box today and you never know, you might end up finding a new pathway to success like Shia Labeouf!

Ryu-Street Fighter

Five Ways Ryu in Street Fighter Inspires Me

Ryu in Street Fighter is, without doubt, one of the most popular video game characters of all time. Back in the 90s every gamer wanted to be Ryu, and it wasn’t just for his awesome fighting skills, his moves set that has inspired countless clones, or even the fact that he could kick the crap out of anyone he chose. Underneath all that glossy shine of fireballs and dragon punches lay something that at the time seemed illusive: a personality, a character, a hero. Ryu was always more than some fighting moves; he was a role model. He inspired fans all around the world in a great many ways. Indeed, so excellent a character is Ryu that compiling this list of the top five ways in which Ryu inspires me has been no easy task, but looking back on my 21 years of playing Street Fighter I feel confident in saying that the following list contains the very best inspirations Ryu has offered to me personally. Of course, you’ll have your own opinion and please feel free to leave a comment at the bottom to let me know your own thoughts about Ryu. For now though, let’s take a look at my top 5 inspirations from Ryu.

5th Way
Ryu in Street Fighter Inspires Me:  Integrity

One thing that is immediately clear to anyone as soon as they begin to play Street Fighter is that Ryu is a man of conviction, who holds firm to his own personal beliefs and never wavers. This is as apparent in his play style (zoning; being in control) as it is in his cutscenes, such as his Street Fighter 2 ending when the first thing he does after winning a tournament is to continue moving forward on his path. There’s something magical about those cutscenes, even though they are so basic, that tells us all to keep heading in our own direction, on our own course, to never falter.

4th Way
Ryu in Street Fighter Inspires Me:  Humility

Not many characters in the Street Fighter universe (or indeed the wider gaming universe as a whole) can be considered to have humility. Most characters are posers, show offs and self centred. Not Ryu. Ryu seems to see himself only as a part of a much larger, spiritual journey. He’s a warrior representing a style of fighting and a philosophical mindset and he makes sure to not let his ego get the better of him. He always places his beliefs and principles above himself, making him a hero with a soul.

3rd Way
Ryu in Street Fighter Inspires Me:  Love of Learning

This quite likely will be one of the less popular ways in which Ryu inspires his fans, but for this author Ryu simply would not be Ryu were he not always learning about fighting, about his spirituality and about life. We discussed Ryu’s humility above and this sense of learning goes hand in hand with it. Ryu seems to believe that there is always something more out there to be discovered, and when he isn’t learning for himself he’s teaching or inspiring Sakura and other fighters, making Ryu a part of a long line of students and teachers. As an artist of various forms, this character strength resonates very strongly with me as artists, of all sorts, are really links in a long chain in which art itself is the ore. Playing Ryu reminds me of that interconnected chain of learning and teaching.

2nd Way Ryu in Street Fighter Inspires Me:  Hope

There’s not much to say about this character strength of Ryu’s as I’m not entirely certain that it’s directly referenced in any of the games (correct me if I’m wrong in a comment below!). However, throughout Ryu’s journey there always seems to be a sense of hope in his destination. Ryu, and we with him, might not know exactly where he is headed, but we believe that it’s somewhere worth heading to.

Number 1 Way Ryu in Street Fighter Inspires Me: Spirituality

Above anything else, Ryu is a spiritual character. This was as clear on day 1 as it is now. Nearly every cutscene Ryu has ever appeared in has carried a spiritual message, from meditating (his SF2 end sequence is very meditative, for instance) to his line “Return it all to nothing, master” in SF4 (a clear reference to the nothingness in Buddhism). Perhaps Ryu’s spirituality is best illustrated in the conflict between Ryu and Evil Ryu, a classic tale of good VS evil, of self control VS self absorption. Ryu reminds us all that we have both a good side and a bad side; his journey for his own personal good is a journey representative of us all. [br] [hr]

Amelie Poulain Character Analysis on Kindness

Amelie Poulain Character Analysis on Kindness

Sit back for ten minutes and allow Amelie’s kindness to inspire you

We’ve mentioned Amelie Poulain several times here on arolemodel.com, notably in our articles on Life Changing Movies and The Biggest Mistake Movies Fans Make: Why You Should Watch More Movies (links are at the bottom to read after this article). Perhaps it’s no surprise Amelie Poulain keeps coming up, after all, as far as movie characters who are role models go, you’d be hard pushed to find one much better than Amelie.

Amelie Poulain exhibits a great many positive traits, but one shines out above all others: Kindness. Before diggin into exactly how Amelie is kind, you might want to take a quick read of our article on the psychology of kindness to understand exactly what kindness is (it’s not as obvious as it sounds) and what the benefits of kindness are on your mental and physical health. You can do that right here: Psychology of Kindness (opens in a new window so you can come back here after).

Amelie Poulain Intro

1x1.trans Amelie Poulain Character Analysis on Kindnessuncategorized movie features characters role models Amelie Poulain is the titular character in Amelie (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain), a 2001 romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Amelie is the story of waitress Amelie—who is played exquisitely and with the utmost charm by Audrey Tautou—a shy girl who loves nothing better than seeing people smile as she sets out to make the lives of others richer and more pleasant.

1x1.trans Amelie Poulain Character Analysis on Kindnessuncategorized movie features characters role models Lessons Amelie Poulain teaches about kindness

1:  Kindness makes you feel more vital and more connected to others.

Amelie’s kindness quest, so to speak, begins with her finding a little box, which she determines to return to its owner. She goes to great lengths to return the box to its owner and when she does she doesn’t even take credit for it. Here, Amelie exhibits altruism, the highest form of kindness, where we do good with no sense of reward. Her only reward is seeing how happy the old man is when he finds the box.

So. . . ?

In this first act of kindness Amelie teaches an important philosophical and psychological lesson. By seeing the old man so happy because of her actions and, importantly, knowing his emotions are real as he has no reason to play-it-up for her sake (he doesn’t know she’s there), Amelie immediately learns one very valuable and inspiring fact: we are all connected and can all influence the lives of others. Where many of us sit back and feel powerless in the big wide world, Amelie, from this one single act of kindness, knows she can make a genuine difference. This one act launches Amelie into a life of kindness and, most importantly, personal happiness as she knows that she is doing something worth doing and making a genuine difference.
